Introducing…
Sunday, February 29th, 2004
Abigail Grace Cave, the newest addition to the Cave family and interestingly a native of both Canada and the U.S, was born at around 5 p.m. at Foothills Hospital in Calgary. She weighed 7 lbs. 13 oz., and measured 20 inches long.
She’s an extremely content baby, and really only cried for about 15 minutes or so after her birth. She sleeps like a rock (so far), but I know, too, that she’s only growing into the role of a baby. Her true sleeping habits may prove me a little too optimistic.
Abby’s birth was a lesson in patience. We arrived at the hospital at 7 a.m. and were “scheduled” for a c-section at 9 a.m. At 9 a.m., we were informed that we’d be delayed until 11 a.m. Around 11 a.m., we were informed that there were several emergencies on the floor that bumped us until around 1 p.m. At about 2:30 p.m., we were informed that the anesthesiologist (here they call him the “anesthetist,” which you should try saying 10 times fast) was called to an emergency and would be delayed until further notice, but by 5 p.m. we should be done.
We were then told that we might consider coming back tomorrow, to which my wife replied, “No, I really don’t want to get poked with needles again” and we decided to tough it out.
Our patience finally paid off. And here are the beautiful results:

Abby gets comfy in Daddy’s arms. Isn’t that sweet?

This is one content little baby. I pray she’ll sleep. We’re both going to need it.

She heard me talking, but every once in awhile, she’d have to crane her neck a little to see who this weird guy was. At least I didn’t have my hair cap and mask on at this point.

I’m not sure what she’s longing for here, but you get the sense that she’s thinking of those wonderful days in the womb, and not the cold, loud world of sensory overload she’s in now.

Abby has a serious side, apparently.

She knew I had the camera pointed at her. She’s such a clown.

I’m wondering if this resembles the look I’ll get from her as a teenager, when my words sound like jibberish in her ears.

Here, Abby think I can give her certain nourishment that I’m physically incapable of giving her. Not long after this she began breastfeeding, and took to it like she’d been doing it since she was a fetus.
Well…I hope you all think she’s as beautiful as I think she is. Funny thing, too…she has the same dimple in her left cheek as BOTH of her brothers. Isn’t that funny?
